5 Signs of Fluffing After a BBL

The fluffing stage of a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is when the final swelling subsides and the buttocks become soft and take on a fuller shape. This final stage of a BBL recovery happens around 3 months post-surgery.

In this article, we’ll explain more about the signs of fluffing after a BBL and explain more about what to expect during your recovery.

What is the Fluffing Stage When Recovering from a BBL?

After a BBL procedure, there are a few phases you will go through before you fully recover. One of the final stages is called the “fluffing stage,” which occurs around 3 months after your surgery.

During the fluffing stage, you’ll notice that any residual swelling or inflammation will finally begin to dissipate, and your skin will finally relax and soften to reveal your desired look.

5 Signs You Are In the Fluffing Stage of BBL Recovery

There are at least five signs to look for to determine when your body has entered the fluffing stage of your BBL recovery.

1. It’s Been 3 Months Post-Op

Once you have hit the 3-month mark after your BBL procedure, you should enter the fluffing phase of your recovery.

2. Decreased Swelling

Any swelling, inflammation, or discomfort in the buttocks will have subsided by this time.

3. Natural-Looking Results

In the first few weeks after a BBL, you may be concerned that your butt looks unnaturally large. Only around half of the injected fat will actually graft, and during the fluffing stage, extra fat cells will be reabsorbed into your body, leaving you with more natural-looking results.

4. Defined Curves

The main reason people undergo BBL surgery is to create more noticeable curves in their hips and backsides. As swelling decreases and the fat cells adhere to the tissue in your butt, you will begin to see smoother, more defined curves.

5. Softer Skin

Immediately after a BBL, your skin will stretch out to compensate for the extra fat injections, leaving it feeling stiff or firm. During the fluffing stage, your skin will have recovered from this process and will finally feel softer and more natural.

What To Expect After a BBL: A Full Recovery Timeline

Below is a description of the different stages of recovery following a BBL, including the fluffing stage.

Directly After BBL Surgery

During a BBL procedure, fat will be liposuctioned from other parts of your body (usually from “problem areas” like the hips or abdomen) and injected into your buttocks. These fat cells graft themselves to the tissue in your butt to achieve the shapely results you are looking for.

You will experience swelling and bruising immediately after the surgery, and you might feel sore or numb in the affected areas. Your surgeon may prescribe acetaminophen to reduce pain and will give you a compression garment to wear for support and to promote circulation.

The First Week After Your Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure

In the first week after your BBL, you will continue to feel soreness and swelling in the injection areas. Avoid applying pressure to your buttocks – use a butt pillow when you sit down and sleep on your side or stomach during this time. Try to do some light walking to stimulate blood flow, but don’t do any strenuous activity.

2 to 5 Weeks After Your BBL Procedure

After about 2 weeks, swelling should begin to decrease as new blood vessels grow in the area. You should continue to wear your compression garment 24/7 and keep pressure off of your butt, as sitting for prolonged periods can cause the results to warp and lengthen the recovery process.

Most patients can go back to work and continue their normal routine after about 2 weeks, but you should continue to avoid heavy lifting.

6 to 8 Weeks After Your Brazilian Butt Lift

At around 6 to 8 weeks, any discomfort or soreness in your buttocks should be gone and you will begin to see the results of your BBL. You can sit normally and start your regular exercise routine back up at this time, including heavy lifting.

Your surgeon will likely schedule a post-op checkup in this timeframe, to assess your results and ensure that you are healing properly.

3 Months After Your BBL: The Fluffing Stage

Prior to the fluffing stage, your skin will have felt stiff or firm, and you may not have been happy with the shape or size of your butt. Three months after your BBL procedure, your skin will start to relax and the last bit of swelling and inflammation will subside. The fluffing stage is when you will finally begin to see the natural results of your BBL.

Only around 50% of the injected fat will properly attach to your tissue (the rest will be absorbed back into your body), so you may still think that your butt looks bigger and less natural than you were hoping for. Don’t panic! It takes between 6 and 8 months for your body to fully recover from a BBL.

6 to 8 Months: Final Results

After 6 to 8 months, you will finally have the soft, lifted results you’ve been waiting for. You will have fully healed from your BBL by this time, and any extra fat cells that have not grafted to your buttocks will be absorbed back into your body.

BBLs are semi-permanent and can last well over a decade if you maintain your health and weight. After your BBL heals completely, you will be left with the shapely, natural-looking results of your dreams!

Frequently Asked Questions About BBL Fluffing

What does fluffing feel like?

As you enter the fluffing stage of your BBL recovery, the last bit of swelling will subside and your skin will no longer feel stiff. Your butt will begin to look more natural and take on a rounder shape, and you should be free of any pain or discomfort by this time.

How long does the fluffing stage last?

The fluffing stage begins around 3 months after your initial surgery and typically lasts between 3 and 5 months until you are fully recovered from your BBL.

Does your butt get bigger during fluffing?

You may have been worried that your butt looked unnaturally large after the BBL procedure, but you will begin to notice a more natural look during the fluffing stage. As any inflammation subsides and the fat cells become fully grafted to your tissue, you’ll notice some shrinkage in your BBL.

How long does it take for fat to stabilize after a BBL?

Newly injected fat will need time to settle in and graft to the other cells in your buttocks. After about 8 weeks, the fat transfer should be stabilized, allowing you to sit and exercise as normal.

If you apply pressure to your BBL before 8 weeks, it could suffocate the fat cells and create warping, so it’s vital that you sleep on your side and promote circulation through light exercise.

Can I wear jeans during the fluffing stage?

You shouldn’t wear jeans or any tight clothing during the BBL healing process. While the fluffing stage will begin to reveal your final look and you may be eager to show off your new body, it is important that you wear loose-fitting pants until you are fully healed.
